The curiosity surrounding the father of late night talk show format continues. Hosts still follow the format that he made so successful. Henry Buskin was Johnny Carson’s attorney for nearly twenty years. This was longer than the entertainer spent married to his first three wives. By his own admission, Buskin was so much more than a legal advisor to Carson. He was a confidante, a training buddy and advisor. It was not a traditional friendship though because it was clear that Johnny was in charge.Johnny was often a pleasure to be around. He could also be distant, abrupt and mean. He was socially talented but had limited interest in maintaining actual relationships. Buskin asserts that in order to understand who Johnny Carson really was, a person must first understand how talented and respected he was. This was not obvious to Bushkin until he had worked for him for nine years. It was clear that Johnny was a star, but it took a gathering of Hollywood actors to observe his true status. Michael Caine, Cary Grant, Sean Connery and Roger Moore were some of the guests at a private event, and they all eagerly awaited the arrival of Carson. They sincerely wanted to know him in real life and seemed to understand that he had a unique gift.Johnny is uncharacteristically late to the party. Bushkin suspects that it is related to the sudden decision that morning for Johnny and his estranged wife Joanna to reconcile. They were due to arrive together at the party. Bushkin had been invited as well, in case the couple had any further disagreements. Bushkin admits to not being sure of how he could help them if they publicly fought. When the Carsons arrive they are fawned over, and Johnny is in a good mood. The reason they had been delayed was because he was attempting to recoup some of the money he had spent leasing an apartment when he moved out of the family home. As they leave the party, Johnny shocks Bushkin with his intention to leave The Tonight Show.1970: Breaking InOne night Johnny embarks on a mission. He has assembled a team of business associates to help him break into a New York City apartment. Twenty seven year old Bushkin had been asked to come along for legal advice should they get caught. The lawyer is conflicted about committing a crime and begins to reflect on how he had got to this point.
